WordCamp Europe 2022 Through the Eyes of Vipe Studio: Event Recap

READING TIME: MIN

We just unpacked the bags from our WordCamp Europe 2022 journey. As you already know, Vipe Studio sponsored the 10th edition of WordCamp Europe, held in Porto, Portugal.

Now that we’ve returned from Porto, we’re full of good energy, having experienced unforgettable moments and emotions, while making new WordPress friends. So, we think it’s time to tell you how these three days went and why WordCamp Europe is an event worth attending.

What Was Unique About This Year’s #WCEU?

The largest WordPress event in Europe was the first in-person one since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the joy of meeting each other again could be felt in the whole Super Bock Arena.

WordCamp Europe 2022 was a milestone itself, as it also marked its 10th anniversary on the old continent.

If our WordPress development agency has to describe WCEU22 with one word it will definitely be: AMAZING!

Contributor Day

WordPress is famous for its open-source ecosystem and the huge community that constantly contributes to making the biggest CMS better every day.

Traditionally, a WordCamp always saves a day dedicated to contributing to WordPress. So, WordCamp Europe 2022 started with contributing. During that day every event attendee could freely join а selected team of 18 specialized teams such as Core, Design, Hosting, Marketing, Plugins, Themes, etc.

WordCamp Europe has set a new Contributor Day record this year – over 800 WordPress enthusiasts in attendance, making it the largest Contributor Day ever held.

Conference Day 1

The first day of the conference started with registration, coffee, networking, and the official opening.

  People of WordPress: Timi Wahalahti

Our WordPress agency was so excited to welcome the WordPress enthusiasts to our booth, and meet new friends. Vipe team also had the best neighbours – shout out to our friends from Otter and APPExperts!

The conference itself started with sessions in different categories, separated into two tracks. The opening session in Track 1 “Why we community?” by Milan Ivanovic kickstarted Day 1, making the WordPress community at WCEU even more inspired. The session also left a powerful message to all WCEU attendees:

“The code is poetry, but the community is where the heart is.”

Sessions on development, accessibility, business, content, and, of course, Gutenberg continued throughout the day. While we, at Vipe Studio, were busy welcoming and chatting with WordPress friends. At the same time, our WordPress development agency’s booth visitors also participated in our raffle for Razer accessories.

Through the eyes of Vipe Studio, day 1 was exceptionally emotional for every WCEU attendee. People were apparently so happy and emotional seeing each other again after a few years. For instance, there were also whole teams at the WordCamp that haven’t seen each other since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How to Create and Commit a Consistent Blogging Schedule

We can conclude that WordCamp Europe 2022 was a much-anticipated and emotional event that will be remembered by all!

Conference Day 2

The second day of the biggest WordPress event in Europe continued with another 13 discussions and sessions and 8 workshops.

Day 2 was also a significant day for us at Vipe Studio. Right after the WordCamp Europe 2022 Family Photo and the lunch break, came the session of our WordPress agency’s CEO Ivan Popov – “How headless WordPress benefits enterprises”. It was his first talk ever at a WordCamp and people were quite enthusiastic about the topic.

Ivan spoke about the headless approach and its advantages for large-scale organizations, such as improved performance, security, and flexibility.

Watch his talk here:

Right after Ivan’s talk, we drew the winners from our game, who won super cool Razer accessories. Once again, we thank all participants that stopped by our booth and took a photo with us!

The conference ended with a Q&A session with Matt Mullenweg and Josepha Haden Chomphosy, where topics about the future of WordPress were covered:

  • WordPress 6.0 and what was released in the most recent version
  • The need for Documentation contributors
  • Full site editing and accessibility will take precedence in the coming releases
  • WordPress Sustainability
  • Gutenberg to be stand-alone from WordPress and be a better contribution to the world, than WordPress itself
  • Focus on creating accessible software available in many languages as possible
Viptor Says: Are the Vaccines the Solution for the WordPress Community Meetups?

Matt and Josepha’s conversation was followed by closing remarks, where the WCEU organizers shared some amazing numbers about the event:

  • 2304 Attendees in person
  • 70 Speakers
  • 91 Organizers
  • 800 Attendees at Contributor Day
  • 65 Sponsors
  • 164 Volunteers

After that, all the participants joined the After party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of WCEU!
