Viptor Says: WordPress Classic Editor Will Continue to Be Supported

READING TIME: MIN

Hello, to all WordPress developers, users, and lovers. It’s your favorite WP reporter here, Viptor. Today I’ll be talking about WordPress Classic Editor as it gets obvious from the title. I know how important this is to all of you, so it’s an honor for me to talk about this subject.

If you’re ready for another update from the world of WordPress, then I don’t see a reason not to dive in right away. Moreover, this type of news always gets me excited about my future work with the platform – I just cannot wait to see what the future holds. Let’s get started!

What is the Classic Editor?

I know you’re most probably aware of this information, but let’s briefly discuss what is The Classic Editor. If someone needs to refresh their knowledge or simply isn’t sure what we are talking about, I hope this comes out as useful.

The Classic Editor plugin is an official WP plugin released in 2018. The idea behind it is to restore the old classic WP editor and the “Editor Post” screen. With its help, users can use plugins that extend the screen and include old-style meta boxes. Moreover, the plugin allows having a consistent experience when editing content.

This is because every post opens in the last editor that’s been used no matter who has edited it last. Our WordPress development agency finds the filter that lets other plugins control the settings extremely useful. In addition to that, the plugins can also choose the editor both per post and per post type.

Will the support for the Classic Editor get extended?

On the 25th of August this year Josepha Haden Chomposy – the WP executive director, announced something that grabbed our attention: the support for the Classic Editor plugin gets extended! Josepha never seems to disappoint us, right? The plugin was supposed to be kept updated until 2021. However, it became clear that continuing to support the plugin through 2022 is what both the project and the community needs.

However, our WordPress development agency wants to mention that the “full support” has a merely current deadline, but it will continue working until the date set for the end of the support. Meaning that the plugin will not suddenly stop working on the 31st of December 2021. Three years flew very fast by and showed that the classic WP editor has more life to live. The editor has more than 5 million active installations at the moment.

What lies ahead?

Predicting the future is something that neither can I, neither can my WordPress development company do. However, we’ll be waiting to see what the future holds for the Classic Editor. Maybe this type of traditional editing will not stop existing, even when the support for the Classic Editor reaches the end. Even if its life ends, there will be another editor project if the demand is wide enough – after all, the WP community never gets disappointed. The Classic Editor has been through a lot, and if you still haven’t given him a chance, now is the time to do so.
