READING TIME: MIN
Hello, WordPress developers, users, and lovers, it is Viptor here! I’m back to fill you in on some fresh news considering the exciting universe of WordPress – by far my favorite one in the Galaxy. Before we move on with today’s hot topic, I want to ask you how are you doing these days? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Now, let’s discuss what you came for. Recently, Jetpack has announced that they are acquiring the WordPress vulnerability database plugin, better known as WPScan. That’s extremely executing news for the WP community. So, I suggest all of us dive into it a little bit deeper. Below, you can find everything you need to know about WPScan and its acquisition.
What Is WPScan?
WPScan is a vulnerability database for WordPress core, plugins, and themes. According to my WordPress development agency, it is popular software in the WordPress community. It works by manually entering the vulnerabilities into their database. The process is done by WordPress security professionals.
Its story began in the not-so-late 2011 as a Ruby script which purpose was to identify vulnerabilities in self-hosted WordPress websites. With time, dedication, and work the script became the large software we know now. WPScan gained its deserved popularity among the community of WordPress developers.
The software sources the vulnerabilities from around the web and from professional security researchers. They are part of the WPScan team and the community of my favorite CMS as well. Over the last years, WPScan has cataloged more than 20,000 WP vulnerabilities
Jetpack Acquires WPScan
In a post from the 4th of November 2021 Jetpack announced that it’s acquiring WPScan. Steve Seear, Jetpack Product Engineering Lead at Automattic (the company that owns Jetpack) said that Automattic has sponsored WPScan in the past and they have used the software to power Jetpack Scan.
Our WordPress development agency believes that this acquisition can give the WP community new opportunities to look for. It will allow the creation of a one-of-a-kind security offering. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to make malware data and APIs more open source. Seear has even pointed out that they will try to find a way to make the API free for non-commercial websites.
Ryan Dewhurst and Erwan Le Rousseau, two of the WPScan founders, will join Automattic to continue improving security for WordPress. WPScan will continue operating on its own, but in the future, we can expect the software to be integrated into Jetpack Scan.
Should We Expect Big Changes?
My WordPress development agency told me that there is no reason to expect changes to the service shortly. Those who are currently using WPScan don’t need to worry about being impacted by the acquisition. There is still a chance for Automattic to merge WPScan and Jetpack Scan into one to reduce the confusion.
With that being said, I’m now leaving you to go on another intergalactic adventure and find more news about WordPress that we can discuss on the blog of my WordPress development agency. Don’t forget that they offer top-notch website development and maintenance services so if you’re on the hunt for professional WordPress developers, Vipe Studio is the right choice.
