How to Customize Your WordPress Homepage
READING TIME: MIN
Can you imagine the impression you’d have on a client who shows up to your real-life office and finds your driveway overrun by weeds, the front door splintered and a signboard that looks like it has seen better days?
Your homepage is the first thing people lay eyes on, and a well-designed homepage, such as using the services of any good WordPress agency for development, helps easy access and navigation on your website. Luckily, WordPress offers a few options for sprucing up your homepage. In this article, we’ll introduce you to three ways to edit and customize your homepage.
1. WordPress Theme Customizer
As we know by now, most WordPress themes have the Theme Customizer. In the ‘Appearance’ dropdown menu, select ‘Customize’ to launch the customizer tool. Under the ‘You are customizing’ tab, depending on your chosen theme, you’ll find a different menu of editing options. There could be options in layouts, or even a choice of templates, with all editable sections marked with a blue pencil. If you find some elements of your homepage superfluous, just click the eye icon next to the element’s name in the menu to remove it or drag it around, or click again on the eye to bring it back. This lets you preview your changes, so feel free to play around before saving them.
2. WordPress Block Editor
So, you’re happy with the edits you did with the theme customizer, but something’s still missing. Here’s where the Block Editor steps in.
Go to your admin page, click on ‘Pages’. Select your homepage and click on the spot you want to add content to start typing, and the Block Editor will auto-create a suitable block for your text. Alternatively, you can, at the top of the page, click the plus symbol and select a block to add text to your homepage. Once your text has been added, customize the text, style, and color in the settings menu.
If you want to add images to liven things up, click on the plus again and pick the image block. This should give you three options to choose from – Uploading from your device, Selecting from your WordPress media library, or Adding an image URL. Once you’ve selected and uploaded your image, click on it to open the toolbar you will need to adjust the size, position, alignment, or add a caption. You can merge media and text in one block, and easily remove a block by selecting ‘Remove block’ from the three-dot menu.
3. WordPress Classic Editor
Even if you’re more of a Classic editor person, there are still ways of building the homepage of your designs. Once again, let’s start by going to your admin page and selecting your homepage. Click a preferred area and start typing. By default, all text starts out as a paragraph, but you can use the dropdown menu to change it to a heading or select the type of heading you want. The toolbar on the left enables other features like formatting, inserting links, or adding more blocks.
Another option on the toolbar is the ‘read more’ feature. This will be especially useful if you’re going to be posting articles to your site, but only want the preview on the homepage. And again, click on ‘Add Media’ to add media to your homepage through Classic Editor. You can either add files directly from the device or you can choose from the Media Library. After uploading, use the options provided on the toolbar above it to edit or remove it. If at any point you wish to view your changes, select ‘Preview’ to view your progress. Satisfied with your newly customized homepage? Publish when you’re ready.
