Changing the Author of a WordPress Post

READING TIME: MIN

Once you’ve built up a reasonably good amount of content on your website, one of the hurdles you might face is having to change the author’s name on any number of your WordPress posts.

The obvious but roundabout way is to copy the content of the post in question and repost it with a new account. As a WordPress agency for development, it’s our prerogative and our responsibility to show you a quicker, no-sweat way to do the same thing.

Preparing the Site for the Author Change

Skip ahead to the instructions if all you need is to change another user’s name to your own on a post.

However, if you need to change the author to another user on a WordPress post, you’ll need to first ensure you’ve created the user on your website. Once the user is added, you can click on ‘Users’ in the menu after logging in as administrator on your WordPress.

With that in place, you’re ready to pick a different author for your WordPress post(s). There are two ways to do this:

For A Single Post

For this, open the page or the post you need. In the edit screen for the post, do ensure that, in the sidebar to the right, ‘Post’ is selected. Then, under ‘Status and Visibility’, find the ‘Author’ option. Here, all the available authors will be listed in a dropdown menu, and you can pick the name you wish.

Once the name is finalized, ‘Save Draft’ or ‘Update’ would save the changes you’ve made.

For Multiple Posts

Now, while this previous method is simple and easy, using it to change the author name on multiple posts can quickly get tedious. So, of course, there’s a quicker way to handle multiple posts that need a new author.

Find the ‘Posts’ item from the WordPress administrator menu (where we saw ‘Users’ earlier) and click on it to view a list of all your posts, which defaults to 20 posts at a time. To show more posts on each page, click on the ‘Screen Options’ setting and change the number.

Once a satisfactory number of posts are visible, select the posts you need and in the ‘Bulk Actions’ menu, pick ‘Edit’ from the dropdown and click ‘Apply’. This will show you ‘Bulk Edit’, and you can change the author name here by picking from the ‘Author’ dropdown. Click ‘Update’, and everything will be sorted – author name changed on multiple posts without any need to edit them one by one!

Optimizing Author Bios

With all of that out of the way, you might want to also update and optimize the author profile. It usually resides at the bottom of a post and includes a short bio, a few of your links, and plugins, even social media. The bio lets your posts benefit from the author’s credibility, and visitors get to connect more with you and your team of contributors.

To create a great bio, pick from any of the highly-rated Author Bio/Box plugins on the WordPress Plugin Directory such as ‘Simple Author Box’, install, activate, and use the advanced features offered by these plugins.

With that out of the way, you have now learned how to change the author name on any number of your WordPress posts, quick and without hassle, and to update the author bio for better engagement. Of course, if you have enlisted the services of a WordPress agency for development, they can take care of all the WordPress essentials, including the author box.
