According to my WordPress development agency, it is popular software in the WordPress community. It works by manually entering the vulnerabilities into their database. The process is done by WordPress security professionals.

Its story began in the not-so-late 2011 as a Ruby script which purpose was to identify vulnerabilities in self-hosted WordPress websites. With time, dedication, and work the script became the large software we know now. WPScan gained its deserved popularity among the community of WordPress developers.

The software sources the vulnerabilities from around the web and from professional security researchers. They are part of the WPScan team and the community of my favorite CMS as well.
